Sports Chiropractic

Strength. Mobility. Function. Health

Sports Chiropractic deals with the conservative management, treatment and rehabilitation of recurring and chronic pain, sporting injuries and movement dysfunction.

The core focus of Sports Chiropractic is to optimize your movement by improving mobility, strength and motor control. Our multi-modal approach to your treatment means we not only focus on being ‘hands on’ but place a large emphasis on improving your movement quality through specific corrective  exercises tailored to optimize your performance. Basically, we aim to get you moving free and efficiently without pain or tightness.

Exercise Prescription

Exercise prescription is what differentiates us to other Chiropractors. We prescribe specific functional exercises to help promote better body mechanics and prevent future re-occurrences of pain or dysfunction. Due to certain repetitive daily habits, previous injuries or reccuring pain we start to lose basic movement patterns which often go undetected until symptoms such as pain are produced. Our exercises are prescribed to reduce pain, improve mobility and restore basic movement and balance patterns.

Active Release Technique (ART)

ART is a form of muscle therapy that can instantly improve flexibility and restore motion to connective tissue. The technique involves releasing taught and hypersensitive areas of muscle, ligament and fascia. This is especially effective for persistent and recurrent pain or injuries as it allows your muscles and ligaments to glide and function easier.

Musculoskeletal Acupuncture

Acupuncture is used to alleviate pain and restore function to specific areas of the body. It involves targeting very fine needles at trigger points (taught bands of hypersensitive muscle) and can relieve pain very quickly. For people who suffer with chronic or nerve pain the needles may be left in for up to 20 minutes to have a more central effect on the nervous system. This ‘dulls down’ the pain sensitivity of the brain, reducing the body’s sensation of pain.

Functional Movement Assessment

Like getting your eyes checked, having your movement checked is a very important aspect of health. This is a somewhat new concept, and it allows us to evaluate the competency of your movement in various positions to ensure adequate range of motion and motor control (strength/balance) is achieved. For athletes, this assessment can often show underlying dysfunctions that may hinder your performance or increase your chance of injury or pain. For non athletes, this assessment allows us to appreciate areas of the body that should be changed to ensure you carry on living without pain or loss of flexibility. The assessment has 7 basic movement tests;

  • Overhead Squat
  • In-Line lunge
  • Single leg hurdle step
  • Shoulder Mobility
  • Hip mobility
  • Trunk Push Up Test for core function
  • Bird-Dog test for core function

The assessment is for anyone and we utilize it in most of our Sport Chiropractic treatments.
