Rehabilitation After Spinal Surgery: Jess’s Recovery

Spinal surgery can reduce symptoms associated with conditions such as disc herniation and nerve compression, but surgery does not automatically restore the strength, physical capacity and confidence required to return to normal activity and exercise. This is where structured post-operative rehabilitation can play an important role.

Jess had experienced recurrent lower back pain and sciatica for several years before developing persistent symptoms that were no longer settling. Imaging identified an L5/S1 disc herniation with compression of the sciatic nerve. After trialling CT-guided cortisone injections, Jess was referred to a spinal surgeon and underwent surgery to remove part of the herniated disc and decompress the affected nerve.

Following surgery, Jess reported a significant reduction in her leg pain and neurological symptoms. Approximately two months later, she commenced our Back 2 Your Best Rehab Program, with the focus shifting from symptom relief to progressively restoring movement, strength and tolerance to load.

Post-operative rehabilitation may be appropriate following procedures such as lumbar microdiscectomy/discectomy, laminectomy and decompression surgery, or spinal fusion. Rehabilitation will vary depending on the procedure, the individual’s presentation and the recommendations of their surgeon. As recovery progresses, exercise can be gradually advanced to rebuild strength and capacity for work, daily activities and training.

For Jess, this included a graded return to resistance training and eventually deadlifting — a movement she had initially been concerned she may never perform again. Starting with relatively low loads and progressing according to her response, Jess eventually returned to heavy lifting and achieved a 107.5kg trap-bar deadlift.

Her progress was also reflected outside the gym. Jess returned to driving, social activities and everyday tasks that had previously been limited by her symptoms.
